Gassnova has expertise in CO2 capture and storage across the entire innovation system, including research, technology development, and technologies for CO2 capture, transport and storage.
Gassnova shall actively foster collaboration among research institutions, industry and public-sector organisations and, through its various responsibilities, help facilitate the achievement of the Norwegian government’s objectives for carbon capture and storage (CCS).
Gassnova’s Purpose and Main Responsibilities
Gassnova safeguards the Norwegian state’s interests in CO2 capture, transport and geological storage and serves as an adviser to the Norwegian Ministry of Energy on carbon capture and storage (CCS). The company plays an important role in strengthening the knowledge base for the further development of CCS and supporting the implementation of the Norwegian government’s overall policy in this area.
Gassnova shall actively foster collaboration among research institutions, industry and public-sector organisations. Through its various responsibilities, its own initiatives and cooperation with other stakeholders, Gassnova shall help create the conditions necessary to achieve the Norwegian government’s objectives for CCS.

The Norwegian government’s CCS initiatives include Longship (a demonstration project for CO2 capture and storage), the Technology Centre Mongstad (TCM), the CLIMIT programme for research, development and demonstration of CCS technologies, and Research Centres for Environment-friendly Energy (FME), which address research and development challenges across the entire CCS value chain to enable large-scale deployment.
