Longship receives international award for carbon management
The project has been honoured with the Carbon Management Project Award, highlighting the importance of large-scale carbon management and international knowledge sharing.
The award is presented to Longship by the Clean Energy Ministerial CCUS Initiative (CEM CCUS) and the Mission Innovation Carbon Dioxide Removal Mission (MI CDR).
Gigatonne by 2030
The Carbon Management Project Award is part of the international Gigatonne by 2030 campaign. It aims to accelerate the deployment of carbon management technologies. The award recognises projects demonstrating how technical, commercial and regulatory challenges can be addressed to enable large-scale implementation.
“A key criterion for the Carbon Management Project Award is a commitment to sharing experience and lessons learned with future projects.”
From ambition to operation
Longship demonstrates how government support and industrial collaboration can help establish a complete value chain for capture, transport and permanent storage of CO2 (CCS). The project includes Heidelberg Materials’ Brevik CCS capture facility and Northern Lights’ CO2 transport and storage infrastructure near Bergen. Hafslund Celsio’s Oslo CCS capture project is under development.
Knowledge sharing at the heart of the project
When the first part of the value chain became operational in 2025, Longship moved from planning and construction to gaining practical experience with full-scale CCS. Gassnova coordinates knowledge sharing from Longship, helping to make technical, commercial and regulatory lessons available internationally.
A key criterion for the Carbon Management Project Award is a commitment to sharing experience and lessons learned with future projects. – This international recognition underscores Longship’s importance in developing practical solutions, reducing risks and enabling the wider deployment of CCS, says Jørild Svalestuen, Senior Adviser at Gassnova.
